MISSION STATEMENT OF THE PORTUGUESE SOCIETY OF SKIN MEDICINE AND SURGERY (SPMCP)
The Portuguese Society of Skin Medicine and Surgery (SPMCP) is a non-profit association with a primary mission to represent and unite healthcare professionals working across General and Family Medicine, Aesthetic Medicine, Dermatovenereology, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Emergency Medicine, and other medical areas where skin care, both therapeutic and aesthetic, is an intrinsic and unassailable aspect of clinical practice.
Committed to advancing research and scientific dissemination in these specialized medical fields, SPMCP aims to serve as a benchmark platform for health professionals, promoting professional development, innovation, and clinical excellence.
Our main objectives and activities include effectively representing medical professionals before political, governmental, official public, and private entities, positioning ourselves as a privileged interlocutor for the discussion, promotion, and defense of the interests of this medical sector in Portugal. We are dedicated to fostering medical and scientific research, encouraging the development of studies and research projects that expand knowledge in these areas, thereby promoting the continuous improvement of healthcare provided to the population.
SPMCP organizes and promotes continuous training events, such as educational activities, scientific meetings, academies, and congresses, aimed at doctors and other healthcare professionals, to keep the medical community informed about technological advances, procedures, and best practices in Skin Medicine and Surgery. We advocate for the creation of a subspecialty in Skin Medicine and Surgery for General and Family Medicine specialists and stimulate institutional and scientific relationships at both national and international levels, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experiences among professionals and establishing strategic partnerships with educational institutions, scientific societies, and health sector entities.
Promoting skin cancer screening initiatives within primary healthcare, implementing certification and accreditation systems for practices and procedures in Skin Medicine and Surgery to ensure quality, safety, and effectiveness of services provided to patients, and minimizing hospital referrals and late diagnoses, especially concerning skin cancer, are among our key missions. Additionally, SPMCP is dedicated to raising public and professional awareness about the significance of Skin Medicine and Surgery, sector innovations, and the benefits of available treatments, fostering greater consciousness about skin health and wellbeing.
Operating throughout the national territory and with the potential to extend its activities internationally, SPMCP aims to be a fundamental entity in Portugal’s health landscape, significantly contributing to the advancement of Skin Medicine and Surgery through representation, education, research, and the promotion of clinical practices based on excellence and innovation.
